Tuscany is the source of some of the world’s best loved and most acclaimed wines, and September and October are particularly important months as they bring the ‘vendemmia’ or grape harvest. Throughout the region, people turn out in a collective effort to pick the grapes by hand – relatively few vineyards have machines to do the work and they are mainly in Chianti. Only relatively few growers, however, still crush grapes under bare feet.
Cellars are open to the public, and visiting them is an ideal way to glimpse the vendemmia. Apart from the famed ‘Chianti Classico’, ‘Vino Nobile di Montepulciano’ and the upmarket ‘Brunello di Montalcino’, there are many up and coming less well-known wines that are of very good quality and easier on the pocket! Nowhere is this truer than in the Tuscan Maremma, home to a number of DOCs including ‘Bolgheri’, ‘Suvereto’, ‘Parrina’ and Morellino di Scansano. “Overlooked for decades and chronically undervalued, Morellino di Scansano and the neighbouring DOC of Parrina are paradise for the bargain hunter”. |

The region has conveniently established ‘strade di vino’, wine roads along which there are clusters of vineyards. There are 14 recognised strade, each characterised by the cultivation of a particular kind of vine. |
