A luxury eco-resort in Bahia, Brazil, 250km south of Salvador. Boasting eight beautifully appointed villas, a palm-enshrouded swimming pool, gastronomic restaurant, family playroom and acres of tropical gardens sprinkled with hammocks and bamboo recliners, it is the ultimate refuge for travelers seeking luxury and adventure.

Located on the Maraú Peninsula, the resort benefits from pristine white-sand beaches, multi-coloured coral reefs and a gentle ever-present ocean breeze. Freshwater lakes, World Heritage-listed rain-forests and local indigenous tribes are just a few of the other local attractions. The whole area is part of a protected conservation area, which means zero development, no high-rise buildings – just mile upon mile of untouched natural beauty.

Fifteen kilometres from the nearest village (Barra Grande), the resort benefits from being splendidly remote. From the moment you arrive, you are completely immersed in nature. Everything from the grass-thatched roofs down to the ethically-sourced bathroom products is designed with the environment in mind – and with virtually no carbon footprint, the resort is a shining example of eco-luxury in South America.

At the heart of the resort lies its lively restaurant, Anna Banana. Part experimental kitchen, part Brazilian living room.Guests can enjoy sharing platters of aromatic delicacies conjured by the lodge’s highly creative Brazilian chef, Elias Feitosa, or opt for an a la carte experience.

Feitosa has 18 years experience in some of Brazil’s best-loved eateries, and his flair for fusing Brazilian flavours with French and Asian classics is second to none.

Thanks to the rich fertile soils in the area, a majority of the produce he uses is organic, hand-picked in local markets or unearthed in neighbouring villages, and all of the seafood on the menu is purchased from local fishermen.

Breakfast is a generous spread of tropical fruit, local cheeses, hand-mixed muesli, freshly-squeezed juices and homemade breads and jams. As well as, of course, unlimited pots of steaming Brazilian coffee…

Lunch and dinner menus change according to the season, but dishes including papaya and lobster salad and salt-baked guaiamum, a crustacean similar to crab with a blueish tinge, have become firm fixtures.

As glorious as the days are, it’s the evenings when Anna Banana really comes to life. Guests swap stories over capirinhas while a flaming sun sinks into the ocean, and as the night sky emerges hung with a thousand stars, it’s only too easy to forget the troubles of the world.

The Maraú Peninsula with its sheltered bay and outlying cluster of islands simply begs to be explored by boat. Local beaches are magnificent and the surf is second to none. For water-babies, there are exotic coral reefs, deep natural pools and freshwater lakes to enjoy. On land, the jungle surrounding the lodge teems with exotic wildlife (marmosets, anteaters and armadillos are common sightings) and rare species of plants are in abundance. Dozens of nature trails start from the lodge and experts are on hand 24/7 to explain all there is to know about the region’s diverse flora and fauna. Should you wish to hire a guide, take a tour or try your hand at surfing, the resort will be more than happy to arrange it – although you may be forced to discuss options over an ice-cold Cerveja.
