Palio Marinaro (Zoom in)

Local folk festivitiesThe most important date in the Santo Stefano calendar is the 3rd August, the day that commemorates the finding of the relics of Santo Stefano, which were brought to Argentario by some fishermen. The celebrations consist of an impressive procession through the town in 17th century Spanish costume followed by a sea procession in which all the local fishing boats take part and are lit up with colourful lights.

On the 15th August the famous ‘Palio Marinaro’ (boat race) between the various districts in Porto Santo Stefano takes place. This rowing competition commemorates a tartan (a vessel used to transport wood and coal), which managed to escape a Saracen pirate attack.
